Education

  • Didactics: Dedicated Pediatric Curriculum with Faculty and Guest lectures, ASPO Fellow Lecture Series, and Fellow Case Presentations, and Pediatric Otolaryngology Journal Club. Didactic sessions are held weekly with rotation of topics and lecture type. Pediatric Otolaryngology M&M monthly as well as UTHSC Department of Otolaryngology Grand Rounds weekly.
  • Courses: Hands on airway, otology, and rhinology courses at University of Tennessee. The Fellow is encouraged to participate in regional and national courses suiting the Fellow’s interests.
  • Regional and National Meetings: Fellows are encouraged to develop research projects for presentation and participation at regional and national meetings. Travel funding available.
  • Operative and Clinical: Hands on learning through the full depth and breadth of cases at Le Bonheur and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Pediatric patients at a tertiary care hospital: 500-mile catchment radius with a large variety of pathology. Excellent mix of pediatric patients with complex pathology and complex pediatric patients with routine pathology.
  • Operative Cases at Le Bonheur and St. Jude comprise the full range of complex pediatric otolaryngology
    • Open airway surgery including laryngotracheal reconstruction (LTR)
    • Endoscopic airway management: balloon, laser, cleft repair
    • Difficult airway management in neonates and infants < 2 years old
    • Cleft lip and palate reconstruction
    • Velopharyngeal insufficiency surgery
    • Rib graft microtia
    • Thyroidectomy
    • Head and Neck oncologic resection with free flap reconstruction
    • Sialoendoscopy and sialorrhea management
    • Congenital anomaly surgery including congenital neck masses
    • Complex endoscopic sinus surgery with opportunities for skull base procedures
    • Facial plastic reconstruction
    • Pediatric trauma management
    • Cochlear implants
    • Cholesteatoma extirpation including ossicular chain reconstruction (OCR)
    • Tympanomastoidectomy
  • Participation in monthly Multidisciplinary Conferences
    • Multidisciplinary Aerodigestive
    • Cleft Lip and Palate
    • Critical Airway
    • Head and Neck Tumor Board
    • Vascular Anomalies
    • Cystic Fibrosis
  • NICU: 60 bed NICU service run by the Fellow with weekly care conferences
  • St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital: Opportunity to operate on some of the rarest head and neck cancer cases in the world.
  • Participation in Ex Utero Intrapartum Treatment (EXIT) procedures for Congenital High Airway Obstruction Syndrome (CHAOS) and assisting obtainment of difficult airways at delivery.
  • Supervision: In accordance with UTHSC policies and graduated in nature.
