Social Justice in Healthcare Leadership Award

The Social Justice in Healthcare Leadership Award is a collaboration between the Office of Inclusion, Equity, and Diversity and the respective Graduate Medical Education Programs in Knoxville, Chattanooga, and Memphis at targeting Medical Residents and Fellows who advocate for social justice and equity and diversity while positively impacting the University and the community; specifically, residents/fellows currently registered as a trainee.

Selection Criteria and Considerations

  • Contribution to assessing or meeting the needs of underrepresented or underserved communities.
  • Level of collaboration and partnerships with relevant communities and organizations during residency/fellowship.
  • On-going contribution to awareness and promotion of social justice, health equity, and diversity.
  • Contribution to leadership development in other medical trainees, students, and others.
  • Contribution to addressing the determinants of health, health promotion, disease, or injury prevention among individuals, communities, and populations.

  • Nominations can be made by faculty, staff, or trainees (peer-to-peer and self-nominations accepted)
  • Trainee nominations must be supported by a Residency or Fellowship Program Director
  • The nominator is responsible for submission of the nomination form and informing the nominee
  • The nominee must submit an updated curriculum vitae and select 1-2 references to submit reference letters to hsc-oied@uthsc.edu. (Note: If only opting to share one reference, it must be the applicable Residency/Fellowship Program Director. Sharing an additional reference is optional and can be any  professional reference)
  • Reference letters must be addressed to Dr. Michael Alston, Chief Diversity Officer, Office of Inclusion, Equity, and Diversity.

One award package in .pdf format, in the following order:

  1. Completed Nomination Form (this form to be completed by the nominator)
  2. A nomination letter (maximum of three pages with a word limit of 750 words) addressed to the Chief Diversity Officer, Office of Inclusion, Equity, and Diversity
  3. An up-to-date curriculum vitae of the candidate
  4. Up to two reference letters supporting the nomination

Three finalists for the Social Justice in Healthcare Leadership Award from a Graduate Medical Education Program in Knoxville, Chattanooga, and Memphis will each receive a $500.00 stipend for professional development (i.e., conference; webinar; membership; subscription) in the areas of social justice in healthcare, cultural diversity/competence in healthcare, implicit bias in healthcare or student healthcare organization conference in addition to a commemorative wall plaque and a gift.

The nomination process opens October 4, 2021 and closes October 22, 2021.

The nominations will be reviewed and ranked by the SJIHLA Committee. Finalists are to be announced at the UTHSC Impact Awards Ceremony on December 10, 2021 at noon (CST). This ceremony will be virtual and open to friends, family and other members of the UTHSC community near and far!
