Volunteer Programs in College of Medicine Admissions

Tour Guide Program

The purpose of the Tour Guide Program is to provide an opportunity for applicants invited for an interview to get acquainted with current students. The guided walking tours of the campus are provided by second, third and fourth year volunteers. First year students may be asked to provide a tour after their first semester. This program is vital to the admissions process which allows applicants to gain "first hand" knowledge of what it is like to be a student at UT. It also allows prospective applicants the opportunity to visit our campus and meet with currently enrolled students, one-on-one, or as a group.

Host-Hostess Program

Current students participating in the Host-Hostess Program, will play an integral role in the recruitment of applicants invited for an interview to the College of Medicine, as well as, applicants who have been offered admission. They will have the opportunity to meet with these students to answer specific questions and encourage them to enroll. In addition, Hosts-Hostesses can provide housing for applicants coming to campus for admissions interviews. The Host-Hostess Program is a voluntary function and students are asked to attend necessary meetings to apprise them of their responsibility.

Scholarship Selection Program

The Scholarship Selection Program is a weekend event whereby the Admissions Committee invites the top fifteen (15) accepted applicants (for that entering class) to return to campus for additional interviews as a finalist. These scholarships are currently valued $80,000 each and the Admissions Committee will select up to five (5) recipients. Each of the finalists receives a letter from the Assistant Dean for Admissions and Student Affairs inviting him or her to return to our campus to compete for one of the scholarships. Currently enrolled merit scholars are asked to host and recruit these finalists. In addition to interviews with the College of Medicine Admissions Committee, a formal luncheon with the Admissions Committee members is planned in their honor, as well as, a luncheon which provides them the opportunity to meet with distinguished faculty, student leaders and the Dean of the College. Housing, meals, parking, a tour of St. Jude and the Brooks Museum are arranged by the Admissions Office.

Parents Appreciation Day

The "Parents Appreciation Day" is a special event designed to provide an opportunity for families and significant others of new students, to learn more about the College of Medicine's academic program and campus life. Parents Appreciation Day will include a welcome by the Dean, an introduction to the medical curriculum and student services, academic support services, financial planning and student life. In addition, participants will have the opportunity to ask questions, meet with faculty, staff, administrators and other parents, relatives and friends.

White Coat Ceremony

In August of each year, the College of Medicine holds a White Coat Ceremony as the culmination of the orientation activities for incoming students. Family members, relatives, friends, faculty and staff share in this annual event to watch these new students receive their first white coat bearing the College of Medicine's emblem. During this ceremony, the Hippocratic Oath, which historically was given to students at the beginning of their medical training, is administered by the Dean.
