LCME Accreditation

A Message from Executive Dean Scott E. Strome, MD, FACS

Dr. Scott StromeThe Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) is the nationally recognized accrediting authority for medical education programs leading to the M.D. degree at U.S. and Canadian medical schools.  An LCME Survey Team will visit The University of Tennessee Health Science Center College of Medicine for an accreditation site visit in November, 2021.  During the visit the Survey Team will evaluate our educational program to ensure it is in compliance with nationally-accepted standards of educational quality established by the LCME for M.D. granting institutions.

The centerpiece of the accreditation process is the institutional self-study.  This is an opportunity for us to thoroughly review all of the educational policies and activities leading to the M.D. degree and develop processes for Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) to ensure we are providing the best educational experience for our current and future learners.

To facilitate the completion of the self-study I have appointed a Quality Improvement and Compliance Committee (QICC) consisting of individuals who are content experts across the spectrum of our educational platforms.  The QICC is preparing an initial draft of the Data Collection Instrument (DCI) which serves as the foundation for our institutional self-study.

As we proceed in generating the self-study we will need the full engagement of the entire UTHSC COM community.  Together we will identify our strengths and areas in need of improvement.  I am excited about the opportunities that lay ahead as we work together in preparation for our site visit in 2021.  I invite you to browse our website, contact us with your feedback and ideas, and check back often for updates and related LCME news.
