COHP COVID-19 Update: April 30, 2020

July 3, 2020

Happy holiday weekend to all.

July has many parts to it. Among other things, for Tim (or others with Canadian heritage)  July 1 was Canada Day so happy Canada Day.

July 1 also represents the beginning of our fiscal year. It will be a year of budgetary challenges with an approximately 2.5% reduction from last year to cover the operating cost shortfall to the institution,   but we will continue to make adjustments and continue to move forward as a college.\

July 1 also sees us more than half-way though the calendar year, with most of it consumed with Pandemic responses. The rest of the 2020 is shaping up in the same way, but now we are a bit more prepared to work through the issues around working, teaching and conducting research in our “new normal”.

July 1 also began with some notable events that I did not want to pass by. I want to congratulate our faculty who have been recognized for their contributions by being promoted in our college:

  • Dr. Kim Carter was promoted to Assistant Professor.
  • Dr. Shannon Hughes and Dr. Jillian McCarthy were promoted to Associate Professor.
  • Dr. Steven Doetti was promoted to Professor.
  • Dr. Hassan Aziz and Dr. Jim Carson were tenured as Professors.

July 1 also marks the one-year anniversary for the launch of the Department of Diagnostic and Health Sciences. Congratulations to each of the faculty in our newest department for the great strides that you have made over the past year in teaching, scholarship and community engagement. I also want to acknowledge Dr. Aziz’s leadership and also note his most recent recognition when on July 2,  he was elected as President-Elect to the American Society for Clinical Laboratory Society (ASCLS) at the Society’s Virtual Annual Meeting. Congratulations Dr. Aziz.

July 1 also was the official retirement date for Dr. Judy Clifft so congratulations Judy, but we are also glad that you are staying on in a volunteer appointment to help in teaching!

July is normally a travel month for many, so if you are still traveling, despite the ongoing pandemic stay safe.

Have a great and healthy July 4th.
