COHP COVID-19 Update: April 3, 2020

The College of Health Professions students, staff and faculty are brilliant, compassionate, and hard-working. They have stepped up to the many challenges we are facing. Here are a few shining examples:

Occupational Therapy

The Office of Student Affairs and Community Engagement has partnered with the Department of Occupational Therapy Project PrOTect Mask Makers to meet a challenge of providing 1000 masks to local health care providers and need volunteers! Materials will be provided (while they last) via non-contact front porch delivery and pickup by Student Affairs and Community Engagement staff.

If you are interested in volunteering, please fill out the following form https://masksewing.questionpro.com

For a video on how to make the masks, please watch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BCJcE-r7kcg

NOTE: These masks are not intended to meet the standard of PPE N95 mask needed to best protect from COVID-19, these masks are intended to be used in conjunction with an N95 to extend its service life, or as an alternative option when no N95 is available.

Master of Cytopathology Practice Program (MCP)

The Master of Cytopathology Practice Program (MCP) is pleased to announce Savanna Altman as the 2020 winner of the Bob Gay Scholarship awarded by the American Society of Cytotechnology (ASCT). The ASCT created the scholarship in honor and memory of Robert “Bob” Gay, who was a long-time supporter and a founding member of the ASCT and the ASCT Foundation. The Student Scholarship is awarded annually to two cytotechnology students who have demonstrated academic excellence and the potential to make contributions to the cytology profession. Ms. Altman will be recognized for her achievement at the next ASCT annual conference on August 28, 2020 in Palm Springs, California. She is the first and only student from the MCP program to win this national scholarship.

Department of Audiology and Speech Pathology

Dr. Steven M. Doettl was featured on the UTHSC homepage for his work helping children with balance and dizziness issues. Dr. Doettl founded the Dizziness Clinic on the Knoxville campus. It is the only vestibular center that can provide a full evaluation of those structures and with a specific focus on children with balance and dizziness issues in East Tennessee.
