Student Voter Registration Information

TO HAVE A VOICE IS TO VOTE - IN EVERY ELECTION!
We encourage UTHSC students to participate in state and federal elections. Elections provide a voice in state and national politics.
The Higher Education Act (HEA) requires colleges and universities to provide students with voter registration materials.
The Tennessee Department of Elections provides information on your eligibility to vote and provides a voter registration application
that you can download.
The Shelby County Election Commission provides information for county residents on voting procedures; including early voting instructions.

WHO CAN VOTE
In order to vote…
- You must be a citizen of the United States, (18) years of age or older before the date of the next election;
- You must be a resident of Tennessee. View Guidelines for Determining Residency at http://www.tn.gov/sos/election/residency.htm;
Note: There are Special Considerations for Homeless Persons Residency and Non-resident Property Owners. - You must not have been convicted of a felony. If you have, your full rights of citizenship must have been restored (or you must have received a pardon); and,
- In order to participate in an election, a qualified voter must be properly registered no later than thirty (30) days before the election. The election commission office will process any by-mail voter registration form that has been postmarked at least thirty (30) days before the election (T.C.A 2-2-109).
HOW TO REGISTER TO VOTE
Register To Vote In Person:
If you are eligible to vote, you may register in person at:
- Any public library;
- Many designated government offices;
- Any motor vehicle office when applying for a driver's license;
- Shelby County Election Commission (150 Washington Ave, Memphis, TN 38103) or,
- Elections Operations Center (980 Nixon Dr., Memphis, TN 38134).
Please bring proof of residence, such as a driver's license, tax receipt, or car registration.
Register To Vote By Mail:
You may also register to vote by mail by completing the Mail-In Application for Voter Registration

Register To Vote In Other Counties:
If you are a Tennessee resident, who is registered to vote in any Tennessee county other than Shelby County, you may contact you resident county election commission office for voter locations. To locate your county election commission you may go to http://tnsos.org/elections/election_commissions.php.
Restrictions:
You may make the request or submit an application to vote by mail, fax, or email with an attached document that includes a scanned signature. You will receive your voter registration card by mail. Your voting precinct and voting districts are listed on the card. Keep it! If you register by mail, you must vote in person the first time you vote.

Early Voting:
If you are a registered voter, you may vote early. Early voting provides voters with the option and convenience of voting prior to Election Day at an early voting location established throughout Shelby County.
Absentee Voting:
Absentee voting allows qualified voters to participate in elections if they are unable to go to voting sites on Election Day. Resources for Absentee Voting

WHAT TO EXPECT AT VOTING
Registered voters may visit any location and cast a ballot in person using a touch screen voting device (voting machine).
