Meet the Director

Stephen C. Tom

Mr. Stephen C. Tom is currently the Director of Space Planning and Utilization at UTHSC (2005 to present). Our University’s physical resources are one of our most important, and limited, assets and one of our most costly liabilities. Thus, the purpose of the Office of Space Planning and Utilization is to maximize the value and productivity of the University’s space resources and to limit space liabilities by creating, assigning, and utilizing facilities in support of its missions, goals, and objectives.

From 1982 to 2004, Mr. Tom served as Director of Research for the UTHSC College of Medicine. Among his research administration functions, he has administered the NIH Medical Student Research Fellowship Program since its inception in 1980. He also served as Coordinator for Student Affairs in the College of Medicine (1979-1981), and Executive Administrator for the College of Medicine Institutional Liaison Committee for Medical Education (LCME) Self-Study Task Force (1979-81).

Before coming to UTHSC, Steve was Coordinator for the Peabody College/Peace Corps Stateside Training Programs, Nashville, TN (1978-79); Instructor for Peace Corps Training in the Republic of Korea (1975-76); Peace Corps Volunteer, Republic of Korea (1973-76); teacher at the Susquehanna College Center for Migrant Children (1973); and teacher at the Ramapo Camp for Underprivileged Children, Ramapo, NY (1971-72).
