*In addition to the base salary, those residents participating in the disability and group life insurance programs provided through GME currently receive an additional $600 per year for disability and life insurance benefits as shown above in Column 3.

Fringe benefits include:

  • Educational Stipend - $1,500 is provided each year for attendance at one of the following conferences: ASCO, ASH, NCCN, San Antonio - Breast Cancer, BMT Tandem Meeting. Additionally, you will be awarded a one-time only presentation scholarship of $500 if you are presenting a poster or abstract at a national conference.
  • Lab Coats – 4 coats are provided by GME
  • Computer Literature Searches and Photocopying
  • Access to recreational facilities
  • Use of Computer Education Resource Center
  • A Tennessee medical license is not required for fellowship-related activities. An institutional permit covers fellows.

Library Resources

Residents and fellows have access to the UTHSC Library.  This includes catalog and database searches, e-books, e-journal finder, and study carrels. Please contact the library to get an access code for use with all on-line services of the library.


GME Vacation and leave policies

Medical Education Allowance

All residents receive an educational allowance that they can use to purchase medical books, i-Pads, and computer software. The money can also be used to pay for the April FM Board Exam, USMLE step 3, and certification courses, such as ATLS. Each 2nd and 3rd year resident is allowed authorized leave time for the purpose of attending one medical education meeting during each of those years of residency. Attendance requires the prior approval of the program director and is contingent on patient care responsibilities and available funds. Reimbursement for travel and expenses will be made according to the University's policies and procedures for such. PGY3 Residents must use CME leave time or vacation for interviewing.

The Residency Program provides an annual uniform allowance of 4 coats for the first year and up to 3 each for the second and third years.


Residents are allowed to park in the covered garage adjacent to the hospital.


Residents receive a card that grants them access to the Physician's lounge where meals are provided daily. In addition the on-call residents may eat in the hospital cafeteria.

Athletic Facilities

A fitness center operated by the YMCA is located in the hospital and is available to residents for a minimal fee.
