Radiation Safety

The UTHSC Radiation Safety Committee (RSC) is responsible for formulating general policy governing the use of radioactive materials and radiation-producing machines.

The RSC has an interdisciplinary membership, and this committee fulfills the requirements specified in the UTHSC broad scope license for radioactive materials. The committee reviews and approves requests for the use of radioactive material and machine-produced radiation.

Research by UTHSC investigators that utilizes radioactive materials or machine-produced radiation must be reviewed and approved by the RSC. This includes research involving the following sources of radiation:

  • Unsealed sources of radioactive material (H-3, C-14, P-32, S-35, I-129, etc.)
  • Sealed sources of radioactive material
  • Irradiator
  • X-ray machines
  • Lasers (Class 3B and 4)
  • Machines that produce a magnetic field >5 gauss (MRI, NMP, etc.)

Operations and technical support are provided by the Radiation Safety Officer (radsafety@uthsc.edu) who directs the radiation safety program.
