Biosafety Cabinet Certification

The Regional Biocontainment Laboratory is pleased to announce that in-house biosafety cabinet certification is now available free of charge to all UTHSC investigators for biosafety cabinets (BSCs) located in University owned research facilities.

RBL facilities personnel Sam Woods and Rob Benson perform the BSC certifications. Both are NSF-49 accredited for BSC certification and each have over 10 years of experience working with various manufacturers of biosafety cabinetry. There are currently only 3 technicians with NSF-49 credentials in the Memphis area and we are proud to have 2 of them right here at UTHSC!

Investigators must register their BSCs prior to requesting any certification services. To get started, please download the BSC registration form. Fill in the blanks and click the "SUBMIT" icon to email to to get the equipment registered into a database of campus-wide BSCs.

Once you have registered your BSC, certification services can be requested by sending an email to at least 30 days in advance of the certification due date to schedule the work. You will be contacted via email to set up the certification date and time. BSCs must be cleaned and emptied out before any certification work can be performed. Details will be provided when the certification is scheduled.

General BSC repair services and decontamination are also available but are not covered under standard certification. Requests for repair work will be scheduled as soon as workload permits. Principal investigators will be responsible for the cost of any replacement parts, HEPA filters and decontamination procedures.
