Department of Plastic Surgery

Robert D. Wallace, M.D.

Department Chair

The Department of Plastic Surgery residency is a three year program that provides a broad training in plastic and reconstructive surgery. Applicants must have completed a minimum of five years of clinical training with progressive responsibility in a general surgery program approved by the residency review committee. Board eligibility in general surgery, otolaryngology or orthopedic surgery is encouraged.

The residents have their most intense exposure to the faculty during their first year of training with rotations being held at the Regional Medical Center. Rotations during the second and third year, with increasing resident responsibility, are composed of rotations at the Methodist Hospitals of Memphis, the Regional Medical Center and Le Bonheur Children's Hospital. The Regional Medical Center is the home of the Elvis Presley Trauma Center, which is one of the busiest trauma centers in the nation. This large patient base provides excellent exposure to training in acute facial and extremity trauma. The Department of Plastic Surgery also staffs the Burn Unit and Wound Care Center of the Regional Medical Center. The Burn Unit and Wound Care Center are extremely active and provide excellent training regarding the management and reconstruction of these critically injured patients.
