The College of Pharmacy offers two graduate degree programs through the College of Graduate Health Sciences at The University of Tennessee Health Sciences Center in Memphis:
Pharmaceutical Sciences
The Graduate Program in Pharmaceutical Sciences program offers Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees in four areas:
- Medicinal chemistry research includes the design, synthesis, and biological evaluation of new medications with potential for use in the treatment of diseases such as cancer or infections and disorders of the endocrine, cardiovascular, central and peripheral nervous systems.
- Bioanalysis research includes the development and application of state-of-the-art analytical technology to detect and quantify molecular entities of biological and pharmaceutical interest, such as drugs or biomarkers.
- Pharmaceutics research includes the design, development and evaluation of drug delivery systems, injectables, and biotechnology drugs, including their production.
- Pharmacometrics research includes the quantitative assessment of drug disposition (pharmacokinetics) and effects (pharmacodynamics) using mathematical models based on biology, physiology, pharmacology and disease.

Health Outcomes & Policy Research
The Graduate Program in Health Outcomes and Policy Research offers Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees in two areas:
- Pharmacoeconomics research includes the evaluation of the economic, clinical and humanistic outcomes of medical treatment.
- Health policy research includes the assessment and evaluation of health care systems and health policy development, implementation and analysis.
Dual Degree Pharm.D./Ph.D. Program
The College of Pharmacy also offers an accelerated, integrated Dual Degree Pharm.D./Ph.D. Program, which combines study for the Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) degree with the opportunity to earn a Ph.D. degree in either Pharmaceutical Sciences or Health Outcomes and Policy Research. This innovative program is designed to reduce the total time needed for completion while maintaining the high standards for both programs individually. It is intended to increase the number of highly trained clinician-researchers that can operate at the interface of basic research and clinical care to facilitate a faster translation of medical innovations into benefits for patients.
If you are a potential future student, we are very pleased that you focus on graduate studies in the pharmaceutical sciences or health outcomes and policy research, and we are honored that you consider pursuing those studies at The University of Tennessee. Graduates of our programs are successfully pursuing professional careers in many different arenas: academia, industrial research, government service, and management, to name only a few. These areas reflect the diversity as well as breadth and depth of scientific expertise represented by the faculty in the University of Tennessee College of Pharmacy. Please feel free to contact our graduate admissions coordinator, Ms. Cynthia Crowe, or the individual program directors as listed below. We look forward to welcoming you for your graduate studies at the University of Tennessee College of Pharmacy.
