Developmental Clinic

The purpose of the UTHSC high risk newborn developmental clinic is to provide both physical growth and developmental surveillance of infants at risk for developmental delays, based on their diagnosis or complications during the prenatal or neonatal period. These problems include, but are not limited to: prematurity, low birth weight, congenital anomalies, brain injury and other neurological conditions, as well as metabolic and genetic disorders.

Our clinic is staffed by two neonatologists, one general pediatrician, a psychologist and two development specialists. We follow children from birth until three years of age with periodic assessments. We work closely with your baby’s pediatrician and make recommendations about referrals for specialist care, early intervention services, physical, occupational, and/or speech therapy, nutrition, vision and hearing tests.

Get Started

Talk with your baby’s doctor in NICU about the most important things that have happened while your child was in the hospital and your child’s follow up requirements. You will attend a discharge class and tour of development clinic. You will be asked to confirm an appointment for the first visit with the pediatrician. Your baby’s nurse will also give you a discharge folder which will contain information about all of your child's follow-up appointment and will include a scheduled appointment for developmental clinic within 1-2 months from your discharge date. Please confirm you most current contact details i.e. phone number and address with your child’s nurse.

Our routine follow up is based on your child’s age with following schedule:

  • Initial visit: 1-2 Month
  • 2nd & 3rd visit: 6-12 Months.
