Pediatric Critical Care Fellowship Program
The Pediatric Critical Care Medicine Fellowship was established at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center at Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital in 1981 and is fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Education (ACGME), most recently in April 2009.
We offer a three-year Pediatric Critical Care Fellowship program that meets the eligibility requirements for the Pediatric Critical Care Medicine sub-board of the American Board of Pediatrics and includes rotations at Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
Our Clinical Facilities
Le Bonheur Children's Hospital is a 255-bed tertiary care, multi-specialty children’s hospital located within the UTHSC complex and affiliated with the Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare System. Each year, the 45 medical/surgical subspecialties at Le Bonheur treat nearly 130,000 children – the majority of them coming from 95 counties in six-state referral area, although children come to Le Bonheur from all 50 states and many countries.
Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital was established in 1952 as the first children’s hospital in the mid-south region and is the pediatric arm of Methodist Le Bonheur Health Care. We are a comprehensive children’s hospital that serves children from 95 counties across 6 states, though many patients come from all over the United States and some are international patients who come to receive treatment from our sub-specialists.
In 2010, Le Bonheur Children's Hospital expanded from a 225-bed facility as we moved into a new 12-story, 255 bed state-of-the-art children’s hospital.
Within this new complex, we have a 20 bed PICU, 10 bed CVICU, and a 21 bed Intermediate Care Unit. This new facility allows us to continue to improve care for the children in the region, as well as to continue to expand our outreach program.
The Le Bonheur PICU, with approximately 1,600-1,800 admissions annually, provides all critical care services for active programs in pediatrics, general surgery, neurosurgery, otolaryngology and craniofacial reconstruction, orthopedics, transplantation, and trauma. Our patient population is about 60% medical patients and 40% surgical, with all patients being managed by the critical care team. The critical care team consists of board certified pediatric intensivists, fellows, residents, acute care nurse practitioners, critical care nurses, respiratory therapists, pediatric pharmacists, pediatric nutritionists, and medical social workers, and when indicated palliative care team members.
The PICU at Le Bonheur has a full time, 24/7 pharmacy in the PICU with pediatric pharmacists actively collaborating on appropriate pharmacologic management for our patients. In addition, the PICU serves as a center of excellence for extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), providing advanced life support to patients from the NICU, CVICU, and Pediatric Surgical service.
In the CVICU, our fellows are exposed to the full spectrum of pediatric congenital heart disease, including more than 400 perioperative patients per year. Fellows will also rotate through St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, which is a world-renowned pediatric oncologic research hospital. At this facility, there is an 8-bed PICU which provides care to about 275 critically ill children with cancer and other catastrophic diseases, the largest population of immune-compromised critically ill children anywhere in the United States.
Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital sponsors Pedi-Flite, our specialized transport team that provides ground, rotary wing, and fixed-wing transport for patients referred to the hospital. Pedi-Flite is staffed 24/7/365 by a dedicated team of critical care nurses, respiratory therapists and emergency medical technicians. In 2009, there were over 2000 patients transported by the team which covers a 150-mile radius by ground and rotary wing, and further afield by fixed wing.
