Division of Gynecologic Oncology
The Division of Gynecologic Oncology is actively involved in all modalities of care for over 1000 new patients annually. Faculty principally admit patients to Baptist Hospital for Women, Baptist Memorial Hospital - Memphis, and Methodist University Hospital. Residents are intimately involved in the care of patients through all stages of their care. This care begins at the patients first evaluation and in follow up care at the nationally renowned West Clinic.
Our Philosophy—Preparing Residents for Extraordinary Careers
The philosophy of the Division is to solidify each resident's ability to evaluate preoperative problems, to refine surgical skills, and to manage postoperative complications in seriously ill patients.
Residents rotating through the Division participate actively in the diagnosis, staging and treatment of all cancer patients. Participation extends to chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Residents also review pathology slides of patient and gather information necessary to plan therapy. These skills are developed while participating in patient care on a service that has approximately 3000 admissions and performs 1000 major and minor surgical procedures annually.
In addition to the surgical and medical management of cancer patients, residents are integral to the decisions concerning rehabilitation and care of terminally ill patients. Residents are integral members of an Oncology Health Team composed of gynecologic oncologists, hospital and out-patient nurses, and social workers.
