Curriculum Vitae

Nancy Appling has been an RNFA for over 30 years. She received her Diploma of Nursing from Missouri Baptist Hospital School of Nursing in 1980. She became certified in perioperative nursing in 1991, and in 1993 she sat for the first CRNFA examination and continues to maintain both certifications. In 1998 she was awarded the Memphis Metropolitan Area Federal Employee of the Year Group Award for Outstanding Public Service. She graduated in 2003 from Union University with a BSN and was inducted into Sigma Theta Tau. In 2005 she graduated from the University of Tennessee with an MSN in Acute Care Nursing. She was awarded the UT Alumni Award for Clinical and Academic Excellence. She is currently board certified and an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner. Ms. Appling has worked as an ACNP, CRNFA at the VAMC for the past 25 years. She is proficient in assisting is surgeries involving the thoracic cavity including, cardiac, esophageal, pulmonary, the diaphragm, and endovascular vein harvesting.

During her time at the VAMC, she pioneered the development of a multidiscipline thoracic oncology clinic for the treatment of thoracic oncology. This clinic was one, if not the first multidiscipline clinic for the treatment of lung cancer in the VA System. In 2006 she was awarded Outstanding Advanced Practice Nurse at the VAMC, Memphis. In 2008 she was awarded Outstanding Graduate Clinic Preceptor by the University Of Tennessee College Of Nursing and in 2015 Outstanding Preceptor from Christian Brothers University. She has published in peer reviewed medical journals and made peer reviewed presentations.

Ms. Appling is an instructor/developer of the RNFA Certification Program at UTHSC, the first RNFA program in the state of Tennessee. She is currently an active member of AANP, ANA, TNA, AORN and GMAANP. She serves as first chair of professional practice for RNFA specialty assembly coordinating council for AORN.
