Loretta Alexia Williams is a third year Ph.D. candidate and instructor in the BSN/MSN program at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. She earned her associates degree in nursing from Shelby State Community College in 1994 and her BSN from Union University in 2010. She has practiced in numerous facets of the nursing profession throughout her 20-year career, developing expertise in medical-surgical and psychiatric nursing. Prior to joining the faculty at UTHSC, she worked with post-surgery patients at Methodist Germantown Hospital. Her dissertation research interests include health disparities, minority health, and mental health in male caregivers within the context of chronic illness.
Ms. Williams is an advocate for the advancement of the nursing profession as demonstrated in her active involvement in many professional nursing organizations. She is a member of the American Nurses Association and the Tennessee Nurses Association. As a Jonas Nursing Leadership Scholar, she has been an active member of the TNA/Tennessee Action Coalition Education Committee (TACEC) since its inception. As a member of this team, she collaborates with the TACEC Board of Directors to assist Tennessee nurses in overcoming barriers to higher education. Ms. Williams is also a member of Sigma Theta Tau International Beta Theta Chapter-at-Large, American Association of Colleges of Nursing Graduate Nursing Student Academy (AACN-GNSA), and the Southern Nursing Research Society (SNRS). In addition, she was recently named the TNA District One Post-Graduate Scholarship recipient.
