Dr. Tommie Norris joined the faculty in the UTHSC College of Nursing in July 2005 and is an Associate Professor in the College of Nursing. In her current role as Director of the Professional Entry into Practice Program she directs the implementation and continuous development of the department through coordination of efforts of the faculty, staff, students and staff in conjunction with the Dean and Associate Deans of the College of Nursing to achieve the mission and goals of the program, college, and University.
Dr. Norris received a Doctor of Nursing Science degree from Louisiana State University Health Science Center, New Orleans, LA with a focus in clinical research and nursing education, a Masters of Nursing Science degree in Community Health and Family Nursing from the University of Tennessee, Memphis, Tennessee, a Bachelor of Nursing Science from the University of Memphis, Memphis, Tennessee, and an Associate of Science in Nursing from Union University, Jackson, Tennessee.
Her program of research is currently focused on nursing education and cultural diversity but she is also funded in geriatrics. Her teaching responsibilities include Pathophysiology, Adult Health, and Cultural Competence and Language Acquisition for Hispanic Populations. She has extensive experience in the area of curriculum development and test construction. She has served as a National Council Licensure Examination-RN Item Writer and is a consultant for test construction and curriculum development. She is an evaluator for the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) and serves as a member of the accreditation planning taskforce. Recently, she was chosen to serve as a consultant for the Robert Wood Johnson Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN) project. Dr. Norris serves in leadership roles on the Sigma Theta Tau International Nursing Honor Society, Beta Theta Chapter-At-large on the Succession Leadership Committee. She also serves as secretary and the board of directors for Tennessee Nurses Association (TNA) District One. She is Vice-President of the Tennessee Nurses Association while serving as the Editorial Board, Education Committee, and Continuing Education Review Committee.
