Master of Science in Nursing Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL) Program

Entry into Professional Nursing Practice

The Master of Science in Nursing CNL program at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center prepares students for initial licensure as registered nurses and certification as a CNL. As the first professional degree in nursing, it also provides the foundation for preparation at the doctoral level for advanced practice nursing.

You can apply for the Master’s Entry CNL program with an undergraduate degree in any non-nursing field.  Through an accelerated 2-year program, you will be eligible to sit for the registered nurse licensure examination and national certification as Clinical Nurse Leaders upon graduation.

As a Clinical Nurse Leader, you will have an in-depth understanding of front-line care systems that promote safety, error reduction and quality improvement in the direct care of patients with complex health problems.

Post-Bachelor’s Science in Nursing

The BSN tracks prepare nurses as advanced generalists focused on enhancing care delivery, improving patient safety, and ensuring high quality outcomes. The curriculum provides nurses with a foundation to improve patient and institutional outcomes through lateral integration at the point of care, evidence-based practice, and outcomes based decision-making. As a Clinical Nurse Leader, you will have an in-depth understanding of front-line care systems that promote safety, error reduction and quality improvement in the direct care of patients with complex health problems.

You can apply to the MSN CNL program with a bachelor’s degree in nursing. The Post - BSN track offers a 1-year full-time or 2-year part-time curriculum. Upon graduation you will eligible to sit for national certification as a Clinical Nurse Leader.

MSN-CNL Program Outcomes

The graduate of the MSN-CNL Program will be able to:

1. Apply leadership principles of complexity and healthcare organization to care delivery at the microsystem level.
2. Provide lateral integration of care services.
3. Use epidemiological and scientific principles to evaluate healthcare outcomes.
4. Use evidence-based practice to guide the healthcare of individuals, families, groups, and populations.
5. Manage the care environment by incorporating principles of team coordination, delegation, and supervision.
6. Analyze the effect of healthcare policy on organizational culture and patient care at the microsystem level.
7. Apply principles of quality improvement and risk management to improve healthcare outcomes.
8. Use information technology effectively and efficiently to provide evidence-based care.
