Nursing Dean Appointed to Center for Scientific Review Section

 

            Memphis, Tennessee (September 21, 2004) – Donna K. Hathaway, PhD, dean of the University of Tennessee Health Science Center College of Nursing, has been appointed as a member of the Nursing Science: Adults and Older Adults Study Section of the Center for Scientific Review through June 30, 2008.

            Members are selected on the basis of their demonstrated competence and achievement in their scientific discipline as evidenced by the quality of research accomplishments, publications in scientific journals, and other significant scientific activities, achievements and honors.

            According to the center’s acting director, Brent Stanfield, PhD, study sections review grant applications submitted to the National Institutes of Health, make recommendations on these applications to the appropriate NIH national advisory council or board and survey the status of research in their fields of science.

Dr. Hathaway has served as dean of the UTHSC College of Nursing since 2000. Her tenure with the university began as an assistant professor in 1984, and she quickly rose to the ranks of professor by 1993.

As dean for the College of Nursing, she has been a driving force in positioning the college on the cutting edge of the profession. Through the establishment of The HELP Center (The Center for Health Evaluation and Lifestyle Promotions), aimed at helping individuals with chronic illnesses, and her NIH- funded research helping post-transplant patients enjoy a high quality of life, the College of Nursing has responded to the needs of the community and healthcare. Now with the Methodist Healthcare partnership, the college is creating avenues for nursing professionals to gain advanced practice credentials in the most efficient manner possible.

Dr. Hathaway earned her bachelor's and master's degrees in nursing from the University of Missouri, Columbia; she was awarded a doctorate in nursing from the University of Texas, Austin.
