KOTB TO SERVE ON NATIONAL HOMELAND SECURITY TASK FORCE

Memphis, Tennessee (October 19, 2005) –Malak Kotb, PhD, University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) A.C. Mullins Professor in Research, has been asked by the Honorable James S. Gilmore III, former governor of Virginia, to serve on the Advisory Committee to the newly formed National Task Force on Community Preparedness and Response. Gilmore previously led the national assessment of homeland security, known as the Gilmore Commission on Homeland Security, which led to the founding of the National Council on Readiness and Preparedness.

According to Gilmore’s invitation letter, Dr. Kotb was selected because she is a key leader in the community. Currently she serves as chair of the Immunity and Host Defense Study Section of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for 2005-2006 and is also director of the Mid-South Center for Biodefense and Security.

Gilmore’s letter explained that, “The mission of the Advisory Committee is to advise the Task Force on how best to create a plan, or template, for America’s local government and community leaders that shows them how to network their community’s resources to strengthen Homeland Security in order to make our citizen’s safer.”

The Advisory Committee will be comprised of corporate, community, academic, law enforcement, fire and rescue, medical and EMS representatives, as well as municipal, county, state and local government leaders from across the United States.
