Ophthalmology Department Receives High Ranking for
Clinical Care
– Second Year in a Row
Last year the department was included in the top
ten ranking for the first time. The rankings were determined by a survey of 164
department chairs of ophthalmology in the country and published in the
publication’s October 1, 2004 issue. Rankings are given in several categories
including: best clinical (patient care) programs, best research programs, best
residency programs and best overall ophthalmology programs.
Barrett G. Haik, MD,
Hamilton Professor and chair of the Department of Ophthalmology, said, “Being
recognized for the second year in a row is a great honor. We strive for excellence in clinical care,
teaching and research; but the real focus is what that excellence means in
terms of care to the individual patient. This ranking helps us to know we’re
providing some of the best services available.”
UTHSC Chancellor Bill
Rice stated, “We are so pleased with the recognition the Hamilton Eye Institute
and the Department of Ophthalmology have received. Certainly, this validates
their hard work and reflects on the commitment of their faculty and staff.”
The UTHSC department is
