CENTER FOR HEALTH SERVICES RESEARCH COMMENDED FOR COORDINATING CONFERENCE

Memphis, Tennessee (May 18, 2005) – The Tennessee House of Representatives recently applauded the work of the University of Tennessee Center for Health Services Research. Three resolutions were passed to honor the Center, David Mirvis, MD (center director), and Rashonda Lewis, MHA, JD (center program coordinator).

Specifically, the Center, Dr. Mirvis and Lewis were recognized for their work in planning and coordinating the Cooper-Jones Initiative’s Fifth Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorative Economics, Health and Education Conference. Held annually the first week in April and sponsored by state Representatives Barbara Cooper and Ulysses Jones, the Cooper-Jones Initiative features lectures and discussions regarding current trends in economics, health and education. Additionally, it reflects Dr. Martin Luther King’s contribution to fighting racism, inequality and social injustice.

The Center for Health Services Research was also recognized for its “remarkable history of development and participation” through the Tennessee State Forums Partnership program.  This program is designed to enhance public policy making by providing legislators with cutting-edge, objective information about key health policy topics. The UT program is one of seven such efforts in the nation that are supported by grants from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and by local foundations.
