The University of Tennessee Health Science Center

Opens Campus Residence Hall to Team Members Displaced by Flooding

_________________________________________________________

Memphis, Tenn. (May 10, 2011) – The University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) has opened a more than 150-bed housing facility on the Memphis campus to students, faculty, staff, residents, postdocs and fellows displaced by flood waters.  This semester the Goodman Family Residence Hall has fewer than 50 enrolled students occupying the buildings, thus several rooms are available for use by UTHSC flood victims.  The Goodman Residence Hall was originally opened in 1988.

“We want to be certain our students and other team members have safe housing if their homes are flooded,” said Ken Brown, JD, MPA, PhD, executive vice chancellor and chief operations officer for UTHSC.  “First priority goes to our students, but any UTHSC team   member who needs housing can bring their family members and stay in the residence hall.  As long as we have space available, we will accommodate our team members,” Dr. Brown added.

Housing for UTHSC team members is being provided at no charge.  As of Tuesday, May 10 at 1:00 p.m., a total of 21 UT Health Science Center team members had moved into Goodman Residence Hall seeking refuge from the flooding.  That number included three employees with their families, two postdocs, and 14 UTHSC students.  Each suite in the residence hall has four bedrooms and two baths, a living room area and a small kitchen.

UTHSC team members should call (901) 448-5690 to determine availability.  All team members will need to show valid UTHSC identification cards to access the residence hall.
