UTHSC SUMMER PROGRAMS HELP STUDENTS

EXPLORE HEALTH CAREERS

 

            Memphis, Tennessee (March 1, 2006) – The University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) is offering high school seniors through undergraduate college students the opportunity to explore health careers by participating in its summer enrichment programs.

With six different courses available, the Office of Health Career Programs –  which is part of the UTHSC Department of Community Affairs’ Community Outreach Office – works to offer disadvantaged young adults a step toward a future career in science or the health profession.

“Each program provides learning skills, research activities, shadowing and internship opportunities that are designed to encourage and peak undergraduate students’ interest in considering a health profession,” said TaJuana Redmond, assistant director of Health Careers Opportunity Program (HCOP).

Participants in the various programs can experience a summer job like never before as they dive into the world of biomedical sciences by conducting laboratory experiments and research. The summer programs also supply classroom instruction and preparation for graduate school.

The eight-week summer institute, with a two week shadowing experience, is designed to increase basic science understanding and study skills, as well as offer standardized test preparation. For more information, call 448-8418 or e-mail tredmond@uthsc.edu.

 

Tennessee Institutes for Pre-Professionals (TIP)

(For college freshman through college seniors – Applications are being accepted)

TIP offers black residents in Tennessee year-round support, advice and activities for those who want to pursue a career in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy or veterinary medicine. Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program

Memphis McNair Program (MMP)

(For college juniors & seniors – Applications are being accepted)

MMP is a graduate school preparation program for students wanting to pursue a PhD. The nine-week summer research internship in the biomedical sciences offers workshops on graduate education and GRE preparation. Room, board and a stipend are provided for full participation. School of Biomedical Engineering Summer Minority Internship Program

(For undergraduate juniors and seniors – Applications are being accepted)

This internship introduces students to Biomedical Engineering, which is the application of engineering and physical science to medical problems. The specific research areas will be in biomechanics, cell and tissue engineering, electro physiology and medical imaging.

Minority Pre-Science Program

(For high school seniors through college seniors – Application deadline is May 1)

This program will familiarize students with technical language and the scientific method. During the eight-week experience, summer trainees will be paired with a healthcare clinician, basic science researcher or relevant biomedical research support technologist.

Memphis Challenge Program (MC)

(Graduating high school seniors thru college juniors – Applications are being accepted)

Created under the auspices of the Hyde Family Foundation, the Memphis Challenge program seeks to inspire and develop future community leaders. As a corporate sponsor for this program, UTHSC provides an eight-week summer internship in its clinical and research laboratories for 20 high school seniors through college juniors interested in a health profession career.
