Receives 2012 Georgetown Lifetime Achievement Award in

Abdominal Wall Reconstruction

Memphis, Tenn. (June 13, 2012) – Guy R. Voeller, MD, FACS, professor of Surgery in the College of Medicine at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC), is the 2012 recipient of the Georgetown Lifetime Achievement Award in Abdominal Wall Reconstruction (AWR).  The award will be presented at the 2012 Georgetown University Hospital AWR Conference which will be held June 14 to 16 in Washington, D.C.

Dr. Voeller is an internationally known surgeon, educator, writer and speaker.  He is the founder of and in practice at Mid-South Center for Minimally Invasive Surgery in Memphis focusing on laparoscopic general surgery at the UT Medical Group.  A pioneering expert in minimally invasive general surgery (colon, spleen, adrenal, hernia, esophagus), he is being honored for his work in inguinal, incisional and hiatal hernia surgery.  He is a founding member and past president of the American Hernia Society.

Dr. Voeller graduated Alpha Omega Alpha from Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans, completing his residency at UTHSC where he was named chief resident.  He also did a one-year Vascular Surgery Fellowship at the UTHSC in Memphis.  Dr. Voeller is board certified by the American Board of Surgery.

Having lectured and written widely on abdominal wall reconstruction, he is the author or co-author of more than 85 professional articles and book chapters on a wide range of topics, and has lectured at more than 100 medical conferences, hospitals, medical centers, and symposia across the United States and around the world.  In addition, he has participated in hundreds of laparoscopic courses as a faculty member or course director and has been involved in numerous clinical research studies.

Named for many years to several “Best Doctors” and “Best Surgeons” lists, Dr. Voeller has received awards from several organizations including the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.  As a founding member of the American Hernia Society, he served as its secretary/treasurer in 2005 and as president in 2007 and was selected to give the prestigious Nyhus-Wantz lecture at this year’s meeting in New York City.
