UTHSC PROFESSOR RECEIVES FIRST RESEARCH ADVISOR AWARD

Memphis, Tennessee (June 6, 2005) – Edward F. Rosloniec, PhD, associate professor of medicine and pathology, was selected as the first recipient of the College of Graduate Health Science’s Annual Research Advisor Award at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC).

The award recognizes a faculty member who has shown continued interest in the growth and development of graduate students, and whose concern goes beyond that of the average, but dedicated, member of the graduate faculty.

Dr. Rosloniec, a member of the Connective Tissue Research Group, joined the Veterans Affairs Medical Center and UTHSC in 1991. Currently he is a member of the Center of Excellence for Diseases of Connective Tissue at UTHSC and holds the position of Career Scientist at the VA Medical Center.

Involved in training over 17 postdoctoral or pre-doctoral students, Dr. Rosloniec’s nomination noted that “he is a dedicated and creative scientist who displays extraordinary leadership qualities by encouraging his associates to have a common focus while promoting independence.”  A second nomination pointed out that “he is a patient mentor who stimulates and challenges his students to think on their own even if they have to learn from their mistakes.”

Earning his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Michigan State University, Dr. Rosloniec received his doctorate in immunology from Wayne State University. He completed postdoctoral research training at the prestigious National Jewish Center of Immunology and Respiratory Medicine in Denver.

Dick Peppler, PhD, dean of the College of Graduate Health Sciences, stated, “I am delighted that our first recipient is Dr. Rosloniec who epitomizes what a research advisor is within our educational programs.”

The award, a plaque and a stipend, is designed to emphasize the importance of the research advisor in the training of graduate students.
