The University of Tennessee Health Science
Center
Raises Nearly
$16,000 for Haiti Relief Efforts
____________________________________________________
Memphis, Tenn.
(January 15, 2010) The University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC)
has raised nearly $16,000 for relief efforts in Haiti. More than $10,100 was raised during a one-day
fundraising drive on the main campus of the Health Science Center right here in
Memphis. UTHSC faculty, staff and
students brought cash and checks to three different campus locations between 8
a.m. and 4 p.m.
UT Cancer Institute
(UTCI) raised nearly $5,700 for Haiti relief efforts over the course of two
days, most through payroll deductions.
With nearly 200 employees in 10 locations throughout Tennessee, Arkansas
and Mississippi, UTCI is a unique partnership between the UT Health Science
Center and Boston Baskin Cancer Group. This singular association combines the
research and teaching capabilities of a leading institution of higher learning
with the patient care of the Mid-South's largest cancer physicians group. UTCI fundraising efforts will continue
through January 21.
The faculty, students and staff of the Health
Science Center have truly shown, once again, the difference that each of us can
make when we work together, said UTHSC Interim Chancellor Steve J. Schwab.
As the flagship
statewide academic health system, the mission of the University of Tennessee
Health Science Center is to bring the benefits of the health sciences to the
achievement and maintenance of human health, with a focus on the citizens of
Tennessee and the region, by pursuing an integrated program of education,
research, clinical care, and public service.
Offering a broad range of postgraduate training opportunities, the main
campus is located in Memphis and includes six colleges: Allied Health Sciences,
Dentistry, Graduate Health Sciences, Medicine, Nursing and Pharmacy.
UTHSC has additional colleges of Medicine and Pharmacy plus an Allied
Health Sciences unit in Knoxville, as well as a College of Medicine campus in
Chattanooga. For more information, visit www.uthsc.edu.
