Memphis, Tenn. (January 7, 2008) – Today, Hershel P. Wall, MD, interim chancellor at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC), appointed William R. Frey, PhD, dean of the College of Allied Health Sciences at UTHSC, effective immediately.  Dr. Frey has served as interim dean of the college since May 2005.

“During Bill’s tenure as interim dean, each of the six programs within the College of Allied Health Sciences has flourished,” said Chancellor Wall.  “He has assembled a team of dynamic faculty members who have created an exciting and supportive interdisciplinary learning culture that permeates the college.”

When he moved to the Mid-South and joined the UTHSC family in 2003, Dr. Frey brought with him some 29 years of teaching and administrative experience at educational institutions that include the University of Illinois, St. Louis University, Ohio State University, College of St. Francis and St. Mary’s College of California.  He has been an adjunct faculty member in the College of Education at the University of Memphis since January 2005.

In addition to his extensive teaching credentials, Dr. Frey possesses extensive practice and professional experience.  During his distinguished career, he has authored books and book chapters, published a variety of peer-reviewed articles and abstracts, and been involved – as a judge or participant – in a range of industry competitions and professional programs.  His work has earned impressive recognition through grant support, as well as numerous honors and awards.

Originally from Springfield, Tenn., Dr. Frey attended the University of Illinois in Chicago, earning a BS in occupational therapy.  He received his Master of Education in counseling and psychological services from Georgia State University in Atlanta and a Master of Health Administration from Washington University in St. Louis, Mo.  He earned his PhD in medical sociology from Ohio State University in Columbus.  He also served in the U.S. Army Medical Specialist Corps. for more than five years, achieving the rank of captain.

In 2007, Dean Frey was recertified as a fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives, the nation’s foremost professional society for health care leaders.  Fellow status represents achievement of the highest standard of professional development, including board certification in health care management.  In October, Dean Frey was selected as national president of the Alpha Eta Society, the largest scholastic honor for allied health professionals.  The society has 62 chapters and more than 12,600 members throughout the United States.

As the flagship statewide academic health system, the UT Health Science Center is focused on a four-tier mission of education, research, clinical care and public service, all in support of a single goal: to improve the health of Tennesseans.  Offering a broad range of postgraduate training opportunities, the main campus, which includes six colleges, is located in Memphis.  UTHSC has additional College of Medicine and College of Pharmacy campus locations in Knoxville and a College of Medicine campus in Chattanooga.  For more information, visit www.uthsc.edu.
