ALLEN WINS AMERICAN PSYCHIATRIC ASSOCIATION

 TEACHING AWARD

Memphis, Tennessee (February 8, 2005) – David M. Allen MD, professor of psychiatry at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC), will be presented the American Psychiatric Association’s (APA) first annual Irma Bland Award for Excellence in Teaching Residents at the APA’s annual meeting in May.

Dr. Allen received his bachelor’s degree from the University of California, Los Angeles and his medical degree from the University of California, San Francisco.  After teaching at Loma Linda University, Allen accepted a faculty position in the College of Medicine at UTHSC in 1992.

“I’ve been involved in academic psychiatry for years and have never known a more capable director of residency training.  Dr. Allen’s teaching of psychiatric therapy and understanding of personality disorders is unequalled,” said Arthur Freeman, MD, chairman of the Department of Psychiatry.

Dr. Freeman also noted that Dr. Allen has written three books on personality disorders and has outlined a novel and pragmatic family systems approach to borderline personality disorder. “Dr. Allen is doing pioneer research and is one of few scientists in the world using strict methodology in his approach to borderline personality disorder. His ability to impart this knowledge to residents obviously won the attention of the APA selection committee.”

Dr. Allen is listed in the 2005-2005 “Guide to America’s Top Psychiatrists” and was named a Fellow in the American Psychiatry Association in 2004.
