UTHSC Students Discuss Struggles, Successes to Encourage Futures in Health Care

Memphis, Tenn. (December 5, 2011) – On Wednesday, November 30, the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) hosted a mentoring activity for 50 honors students of Frayser High School in grades nine through twelve.

The students began the day with a tour of the National Civil Rights Museum.  The tour exposed the youth to the struggles African-Americans endured before advancing as a people.  Following the museum tour, the Frayser High honors students headed to the UT Health Science Center campus for a noon luncheon and frank discussions with UTHSC students.  The Frayser students also took an abbreviated campus tour.

“The trip to the museum showed them their heritage and the struggle others went through,” said Pam Houston, director of Special Events and Community Affairs at UTHSC. “The whole idea is to inspire them to have a better life.”

The discussion panel included UTHSC students representing the university’s six colleges:  Allied Health Sciences, Dentistry, Graduate Health Sciences, Medicine, Nursing and Pharmacy.  UTHSC students reflected on individual choices they have made, as well as personal and academic successes they have enjoyed and goals they aspire to as upcoming professionals in the health care industry.  UTHSC students intend to partner with the Frayser students throughout their academic careers.

As the flagship statewide academic health system, the mission of the University of Tennessee Health Science Center is to bring the benefits of the health sciences to the achievement and maintenance of human health, with a focus on the citizens of Tennessee and the region, by pursuing an integrated program of education, research, clinical care, and public service.  In 2011, UT Health Science Center celebrates its centennial: 100 years advancing the future of health care.  Offering a broad range of postgraduate training opportunities, the main UTHSC campus is located in Memphis and includes six colleges: Allied Health Sciences, Dentistry, Graduate Health Sciences, Medicine, Nursing and Pharmacy.  The UTHSC campus in Knoxville includes a College of Medicine, College of Pharmacy, and an Allied Health Sciences unit.  In addition, the UTHSC Chattanooga campus includes a College of Medicine and an Allied Health Sciences unit.  Since its founding in 1911, UTHSC has educated and trained more than 53,000 health care professionals on campuses and in health care facilities across the state.  For more information, visit: www.uthsc.edu.
