Dr. Sakauye Appointed Co-Chair of Psychiatry

Memphis, Tenn. (December 20, 2007) – James A. Greene, MD, chair designee in the Department of Psychiatry, has announced that effective January 1, 2008, Kenneth M. Sakauye, MD, professor of psychiatry, has been appointed co-chair of the Department of Psychiatry in the College of Medicine, Memphis. 

 “After joining us in May 2006 from the Louisiana State University College of Medicine in New Orleans,” Dr. Greene commented, “Dr. Sakauye has demonstrated the leadership and industry needed to build an outstanding department.”

An internationally known geriatric psychiatrist, Dr. Sakauye serves as director of the section of geriatric psychiatry.  In this role, he has been instrumental in the development and accreditation of a UT Psychiatric Fellowship program in geriatric psychiatry that will begin in July 2008. This fellowship program will be based at St. Francis Hospital and the Veterans Administration Medical Center, both in Memphis.

In addition, Dr. Sakauye has developed the UTHSC psychiatric clinical service at St. Francis Hospital, establishing a strong inpatient and consultative service, as well as a teaching program.  His expertise extends to both emergency psychiatry and electroconvulsive therapy.  In January, Dr. Sakauye’s textbook on geriatric psychiatry, which has garnered national attention and acclaim, will be released.

Executive Dean Steve Schwab noted, “Ken Sakauye has emerged as a leader on this campus in terms of clinical trials in patients with major psychiatric illness. He brings us a powerful presence in academic and clinical trial-based psychiatry.”

A graduate of the University of Chicago School of Medicine, Dr. Sakauye completed his residency in psychiatry at the University of Chicago Michael Reese Hospital.  He is board certified in adult and geriatric psychiatry.
