Memphis, Tenn. (December 15, 2011) – Bradley A. Boucher, PharmD, FCCP, FCCM, BCPS,  professor of Clinical Pharmacy and associate professor of Neurosurgery at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC), received the American College of Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP) 2011 Clinical Practice Award.  Held this fall in Pittsburgh, Pa., this prestigious award was presented during the opening general session of the ACCP 2011 Annual Meeting.  Criteria considered in identifying potential candidates include exceptional leadership in the development of innovative clinical pharmacy services and sustained excellence in service delivery.

In 1984, Dr. Boucher joined UTHSC and started a critical care pharmacy practice in the intensive care unit of the Elvis Presley Memorial Trauma Center, Regional Medical Center at Memphis (The MED), where he still practices today.  In 1986, Dr. Boucher trained his first pharmacy fellow in intensive care research at The MED, and in 1987, he developed a critical care/nutrition support pharmacy residency program at the trauma center with his colleague, Rex O. Brown, PharmD.  This program allows postgraduate pharmacists to receive practice training.  Since 1986, Dr. Boucher has trained nine critical care pharmacy fellows and 48 critical care pharmacy residents.  The number of critical care pharmacy residents he has trained at The MED and UTHSC is among the highest in the nation.

“My professional fulfillment has come from providing a rich training ground for pharmacy postgraduate residents and fellows over the years,” stated Dr. Boucher.  “At the end of the day, nurturing their growth so that they can move forward in having successful careers has been one of the most rewarding aspects of my own career at UTHSC.”

In recommending Dr. Boucher, Christopher Wood, PharmD, FCCP, BCPS, UTHSC associate professor of Clinical Pharmacy and a long-time colleague, wrote in his letter of nomination: “Dr. Boucher has contributed regularly to the medical and pharmacy literature and has delivered many presentations at scientific and professional meetings focusing on critical care pharmacotherapy and other intensive care–related subjects.  As a current ACCP fellow and a past president and treasurer of ACCP, he has provided significant leadership within the college and the profession.”

The American College of Clinical Pharmacy is a professional and scientific society that provides leadership, education, advocacy, and resources enabling clinical pharmacists to achieve excellence in practice and research.  ACCP membership is composed of practitioners, scientists, educators, administrators, students, residents, fellows, and others committed to excellence in clinical pharmacy and patient pharmacotherapy.  For more information about the ACCP and its programs, visit www.accp.com.
