UT Associate Professor Awarded Grant to Enhance Family Medicine Program
Memphis, Tennessee (August 10, 2004) – UT Health Science Center associate professor, John E. Delzell, Jr., MD, MSPH, has been awarded a $269,433 grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Health Resources and Services Administration.
Titled, “Residency Training in Primary Care,” the grant will provide Dr. Delzell funding for a three-year period to enhance the Saint Francis Family Medicine Residency program, where he serves as director. The grant targets two areas including care of the elderly and procedural training.
Dr. Delzell commented, “In regard to caring for the elderly, we plan to implement an innovative curriculum to improve end-of-life care, as well as incorporate geriatric pharmacology training and institute a multi-disciplinary geriatric assessment team. In regard to procedural training, we plan to incorporate a new curriculum using training models and rural training sites to teach endoscopy skills.”
Eugene Mangiante, Jr., MD, associate dean for graduate and continuing medical education in the UT College of Medicine, commented, “We are so pleased Dr. Delzell has received this grant. This additional funding will provide him the resources to address current issues and incorporate emerging technologies into this program. Bottom line is that it will help make a good program even better.”
