Tennessee Neurosurgeon Named President-Elect of the

American Association of Neurological Surgeons

 

SAN FRANCISCO (April 24, 2006) - Jon H. Robertson, MD, was named president-elect of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) at the AANS Annual Meeting in San Francisco, April 24-27, 2006. An active member of the AANS since 1983, he has served on the AANS Board of Directors since 1999, most recently finishing a three-year term as secretary. He is chair of the Development Committee, and a member of the following committees: Executive, Finance, Long-Range Planning, Neuro-Knowledge™ Advisory Task Force, and the new AANSPAC Board of Directors. He served as chair of the Annual Meeting Committee in 1994.

 

Dr. Robertson was named professor and chair of the Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis in 1997. He has been a practicing member of the Semmes-Murphey Neurologic and Spine Institute since 1979.

 

After receiving his bachelor’s degree from Southwestern College in Memphis and a medical degree from the University of Tennessee Medical School, Dr. Robertson completed his internship and a year of general surgery at the City of Memphis Hospitals. He finished his neurosurgery residency in 1979 at the University of Tennessee Center for Health Sciences. Dr. Robertson was certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgery in 1982.

 

Active in many professional organizations, Dr. Robertson has served as a member of the American Board of Neurological Surgery, American Academy of Neurological Surgery, Society of Neurological Surgeons, Society of University Neurosurgeons, North American Skull Base Society, the Southern Neurosurgical Society, and is a Board member of the Medical Education & Research Institute in Memphis.

 

Dr. Robertson is a published author, including the two books, Lasers in Neurosurgery and Cranial Base Surgery. He has published nearly 50 publications and 25 book chapters as co-author, and given approximately 200 presentations at meetings worldwide.

 

Founded in 1931 as the Harvey Cushing Society, the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) is a scientific and educational association with more than 6,800 members worldwide. The AANS is dedicated to advancing the specialty of neurological surgery in order to provide the highest quality of neurosurgical care to the public. All active members of the AANS are certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgery, the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons (Neurosurgery) of Canada or the Mexican Council of Neurological Surgery, AC. Neurological surgery is the medical specialty concerned with the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of disorders that affect the entire nervous system including the spinal column, spinal cord, brain and peripheral nerves.
