Dr. David Cunningham was born in Pleasant Hill, Tennessee, grew up in the Cumberland mountains in the small town of Spencer, TN. He attended the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, subsequently transferring to the University of Tennessee School of Pharmacy in Memphis, Tennessee where he eared a Doctors Degree in Pharmacy. He then attended the University of Tennessee School of Medicine and following graduation with an M.D. degree, completed an internship and a general surgery residency at the Methodist Hospital of Memphis. Following his internship and general surgery residencies, he completed a residency in neurological surgery, rotating at Methodist Hospital, the Veterans Hospital and the University of Tennessee Medical Center. In 1995 he completed training at the University of Pittsburgh in Gamma Knife Stereotactic Radiosurgery. Dr. Cunningham was a member of the Neurosurgical Group of Memphis which merged with the Semmes-Murphey Clinic in 1995.

Dr. Cunningham is Board certified in Neurological Surgery.

Dr. Cunningham is presently the Medical Director of the Memphis Regional Gamma Knife Center and is Associate Professor in Neurological Surgery at the University of Tennessee at Memphis. Dr. Cunningham is also President of the Tennessee Board of Medical Examiners.

Dr. Cunningham is married to Sara and they have four children, Mark, Bruce, Dale and Sheri.
