College of Medicine Admissions Committee

The responsibility for the selection of students for admission to the College of Medicine is delegated to the Committee on Admissions by the Executive Dean of the College of Medicine under the authority of the Board of Trustees of the University. The Committee is charged with selecting those applicants who are deemed to be the most highly qualified for the study and practice of medicine. The Admissions Committee also establishes standards for admission to the College, these standards to be approved by the College of Medicine, the Administration of The UT Health Science Center and the University Board of Trustees.

Representation includes members of both clinical and basic medical science faculty in the College of Medicine, practicing physicians from across the state and medical students from the junior and senior classes. Members are appointed to the Committee by the Executive Dean of the College of Medicine and periodic rotation of membership occurs so as to allow the infusion of new perspectives while preserving a necessary degree of stability based on experience with the selection process.

In discharging its functions, the Committee on Admissions is not bound by the actions of previous committees. However, acceptances stand unless compelling evidence of moral turpitude and unethical or dishonest conduct not known to the Committee prior to acceptance is subsequently brought to its attention. The decisions of the Committee regarding the acceptance or denial of applicants are presented as recommendations to the Executive Dean and become final only after his approval.
