IPECS Health Care Challenge 2014
The Health Care Challenge is an interprofessional education (IPE) elective and a wonderful opportunity to meet students and faculty from colleges across the campus wanting to prepare themselves to function effectively on a healthcare team. Content stresses team-building, program development and presentation skills. The course includes a team-based competition. Student teams comprised of 4 to 6 members representing 3 or more professions present proposed programs or activities to address the healthcare needs of a select target population in the greater Memphis community.
The ability to work in teams is more than a nice idea. Numerous research studies have linked team behaviors and the resulting good communication skills with improved patient safety and quality of care. Prior participants in campus interprofessional activities report great interest on the part of employers with some receiving preferential hiring for those demonstrating experience with interprofessional teams. UTHSC campus offers IPE courses to enhance the focused educational programs offered in our colleges.
UTHSC students in good academic standing enrolled during the spring term (when the competition occurs) are eligible to register for the course and participate in the competition. Teams are supported by faculty advisors from across the campus
The Health Care Challenge begins registration on November 1st with an opportunity to meet others during the Fall Semester. Registration is limited and on a first come-first served basis.
When you register, include:
IPEH 905, Section 001: Special Topics in IPE: Health Care Challenge
The course is offered during the Spring2 Session (January 2 through May 30).
One of the first questions students asked in the past was “How much time will this involve?” The course includes approximately 15 hours of online courses and face-to-face learning sessions which include the content on team-building, program development and presentation skills. Students in previous years reported approximately 8 to 15 hours of planning and preparation time for the individual team proposals and presentations.
