Leaving the University

If you will be separating employment from the university and you are not eligible or will not be retiring at this time please read the information below for your options with regard to your retirement plan.

TCRS Legacy Plan Members (hired before 7/1/2014)

Employees who resign from the university and do not have 5 years of creditable service with TCRS do not qualify for retirement benefits. If you have at least 5 years of creditable service, you are vested and have established your rights under this plan. If you choose to delay your retirement or when you do meet retirement qualifications listed below please contact TCRS to begin the retirement process at 1-800-770-8277.

Early Retirement

  • Age 55 - at least 10 years of service
  • Any age - at least 25 years of service

Full Retirement

  • Age 60 - at least 5 years of service
  • Any age - at least 30 years of service

TCRS Hybrid Plan Members (hired after 7/1/2014)

Hybrid members who do not have 5 years of creditable service may request a refund of their contributions and interest only at the time of termination. The defined benefit portion provided by UT will be forfeited.

If you have at least 5 years of creditable service, you are vested and have established your rights under this plan. If you choose to delay your retirement or when you do meet retirement qualifications listed below please contact TCRS to begin the retirement process at 1-800-770-8277.

Early retirement

  • Age 60 with at least 5 years of creditable service
  • Rule 80: age plus years of creditable service equals 80

Full Retirement

  • Age 65 with at least 5 years of creditable service
  • Rule 90:  age plus years of creditable service equals 90

Plan Administrator Signature Instructions

You will be asked for the plan administrator signature for any rollover or distribution options you choose. Complete all pages of the application you receive from the provider and send this to our plan administrator in Knoxville. Please mail completed forms to:
