Opportunity to Explore Special Interests

Students are given the unique opportunity to choose an area of special interest to them for additional study during their senior year. Students have chosen a wide range of areas, including specialized clinical studies, assignment to the medical examiners’ office, community health clinics, research labs and many others. Because we are part of a major health science center, the kinds of experiences students can choose are quite varied and numerous.

Preparation for Professional Responsibility

Students discuss issues in the field with practicing Medical Laboratory Scientists during seminar courses and through involvement in Medical Laboratory Science professional societies. Opportunities for participation in local, state and national professional organizations are made available and encouraged. A course is included which helps young professionals understand the social, economic, and political factors impacting health care today and how they may best contend with them in a professional manner.

Education in a Health Science Center

Since the UT Health Science Center provides education for a number of other health care professionals on this campus, Medical Laboratory Science students begin to experience the concept of the health care team early in the curriculum. Such interaction at this stage of professional growth is vital in the development of true professionals who understand their role in delivering quality health care services, and fosters respect and understanding among the professions.
