Tennessee Institutes for Pre-Professionals (TIP)

Eligibility: Freshman‐Senior Undergraduate Students; Must represent an historically underrepresented group in science and in the healthcare field

Program Description: TIP is a seven‐week residential program designed to increase the representation and active participation of underrepresented groups in the healthcare field. TIP provides a unique opportunity for these students to become equipped for what we hope is eventual matriculation into one of the programs at UTHSC. TIP is for residents of Tennessee who wish to pursue a career in dentistry, medicine, nursing, occupational and/or physical therapy, pharmacy, or other health professions. TIP offers activities designed to assist students in realizing their career goals, as well as year‐round advice/support.

Track I – generally reserved for college freshmen and sophomores; provides a primary care internship in a clinical setting based on students’ field of interest; weekly personal and professional development workshops

Track II – generally reserved for college juniors and seniors preparing to take their professional school admissions test; provides a complete test preparation course with content review, test‐ taking strategies, and full‐length practice tests

  • Tennessee resident
  • Currently enrolled as an undergraduate student at an accredited college or university
  • Minimum cumulative and science GPA of 3.0
  • Official transcript(s)
  • At least two (2) letters of recommendation with at least one (1) from a faculty member of a science course or pre‐health advisor

Track I

  • Freshmen must have completed one semester of general biology and/or general chemistry
  • Sophomores must have completed two semesters of general biology and general chemistry; one semester of organic chemistry and/or physics

Track II

  • Junior and seniors must have completed all science courses required for the DAT/MCAT/PCAT/GRE

  • April 1 – acceptances will be emailed on or around this date
  • April 15 – deadline to confirm acceptance
  • May 1 – deadline to submit all required forms for accepted participants

Summer Research Scholars (SRS)

Eligibility: Freshman‐Junior Undergraduate Students

Program Description: SRS is an eight‐week program designed to help exceptionally well‐qualified undergraduate students gain valuable research experience in the College of Graduate Health Sciences and the College of Pharmacy. Students are matched with UTHSC faculty and spend the eight weeks learning about real‐world research protocols, enhancing biomedical information and retrieval skills, and designing scientific abstracts, among other things. The program culminates with presentations by the students based on the research they worked on during the summer.
