Meet The Faculty

The program has well-known and outstanding faculty members who have served and are serving in numerous academic leadership positions at the local, state, regional and national levels. Faculty members have served as officers in respective professional associations (American Dental Education Association, American Dental Hygienists Association, National Dental Association, and American Association of Dental Schools). Faculty members have contributed to the knowledge of the field, with chapters in textbooks, journal reviewers, articles in professional journals, and are often invited to speak at national and regional conferences.

Lynn Russell, RDH, BS, Med, EdD

Ms. Lynn Russell is the Chair of the Program. She received her BSDH from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, an MEd from Christian Brothers University in Memphis, TN, and an EdD from the University of Memphis.

Cassandra Holder Ballard, EdD

Dr. Cassandra Holder Ballard is an Associate Professor in the Department of Dental Hygiene at UTHSC. She holds a master’s degree in Public Administration with a concentration in Health Services Administration, a doctorate in Adult and Higher Education, and a Bachelor’s Degree in Dental Hygiene. Dr. Ballard has over 20 years of experience in dental hygiene education. She has served as a Program Director and Department Chair. Her experience and knowledge of allied dental education spans the range of associate, baccalaureate and graduate degree programs in community college, health science center, and dental school settings. Currently she teaches MDH 600 Methods and Strategies of Dental Hygiene Teaching and DH 425 Oral Disease Prevention and Patient Education. Her research interest includes the development of cultural competency in health care, issues in health care disparities, and interprofessional education.


Susan Crim, EdD

Dr. Susan Crim has served as a Program Director and/or Department Chair in Dental Hygiene for twenty-five years. Her experience and knowledge of allied dental education spans the range of associate, baccalaureate and graduate degree programs in community college, university and dental school institutions. She holds a master’s degree in Adult Education and a doctoral degree in Education, Leadership and Human Resource Development. Her research has focused on distance learning and online education with publications in book chapters, journals, and scientific presentations. Dr. Crim received a Malcolm S. Knowles Dissertation of the Year Award in 2006 presented by the International Academy of Human Resource Development. Dr. Crim serves as an Associate Professor in the online MDH Program and on the US Oral Care Advisory Board Division of Johnson & Johnson Oral Healthcare Research

Dr. Crim has been involved with allied dental education on a national level by appointments to professional organization committees and councils. These appointments have included, but are not limited to, the Commission on Dental Accreditation Dental Hygiene Review Committee; the American Dental Association (ADA) National Board Dental Hygiene Test Construction Committee and the Case-Based Test Construction Committee; Committee Chair for American Dental Education (ADEA) Dental Hygiene Curriculum Guidelines; Chair of the ADHA Council on Dental Hygiene Education; ADEA Council of Allied Dental Hygiene Program Directors (CADPD); ADEA CADPD Task Force on Collaboration, Innovation and Differentiation; ADEA Task Force on Guiding Principles for the Emerging Dental Workforce Models; ADEA Task Force for Dental Hygiene Centralized Application Service; and, the ADEA Legislative Advisory Committee. Additionally, she has been involved in leadership positions with professional organizations such as constituent offices, the ADEA Council of Allied Dental Program Directors and, most recently, the ADEA Board of Directors as the Vice-President for the Council of Allied Dental Program Directors. She was selected as a recipient of a 2011 ADEA Presidential Citation.

Cynthia Calhoun, EdD

Dr. Cynthia Calhoun serves as Adjunct Faculty and teaches DH 701 Student Services in DH Education. She currently serves as Executive Director, Student Retention and Graduation and is a tenured Professor in the Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences and Education at Southwest Tennessee Community College. Her expertise and research interests are student advising, retention, leadership, adult learners, and community colleges. Dr. Calhoun's professional presentations and workshops include both national and international conferences. She holds a bachelor's degree in Sociology from Fisk University, a master's in Sociology and doctorate in higher and adult education from the University of Memphis.

Karen Adsit, EdD

Dr. Karen Adsit managed UTC's online and distance learning program for many years and is currently professor in the School of Education and at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga where she teaches educational technology and instructional design courses. Dr. Adsit holds a doctorate in Education/Curriculum and Instruction from the University of Houston and a Masters in Adult and Continuing Education, with specialization in Biomedical Communication from the University of Nebraska. Dr. Adsit has taught online for over 12 years and was an instructional designer/faculty developer at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center for 10 years. She also served as president of the Health and Sciences Communications Association in 1996. Dr. Adsit’s research interests are faculty development and instructional design and development, online teaching & learning, educational technology integration in higher education, user interface design, and copyright and fair use issues in higher education.
