Chancellor's Biography
UTHSC Chancellor, Steve J. Schwab, MD, is a native of Cape Girardeau, Missouri and is a licensed and board certified Nephrologist and Internist. He was appointed Executive Dean for the College of Medicine for the University of Tennessee (Memphis, Knoxville and Chattanooga college campuses) in 2006 and was named Chancellor for the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) in 2010.
Dr. Schwab is a graduate of the University of Missouri School of Medicine and completed his Internship/Residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Kansas Hospitals and Clinics. Following completion of his residency, Dr. Schwab completed a fellowship in Nephrology with Washington University at the Barnes Hospital.
Dr. Schwab has held numerous academic appointments. He began as an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the Washington University School of Medicine and then spent 18 years on the faculty at Duke University, where he rose to become Professor and Vice Chair of the Department of Medicine. In 2003, he was named Regents Professor and Chair of the Department of Medicine at the University of Georgia System: Medical College of Georgia, later being named Interim Dean and Chief Clinical Officer. He became Executive Dean for the University of Tennessee College of Medicine in 2006. He was appointed Interim Chancellor of the UTHSC in 2009 and was named Chancellor in 2010.
Dr. Schwab served from 1996 – 2002 of the American Board of Internal Medicine, and the Subspecialty Board of Nephrology. Dr. Schwab has served on numerous editorial boards of Peer-Reviewed Journals including the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology, Kidney International, American Journal of Kidney Disease, and Clinical Nephrology, as well as serving as Editor-in-Chief of Nephrology for "Up to Date." Dr. Schwab was named to both America's Best Doctors, and America's Top Doctors for most of his practice career.
Throughout his career, Dr. Schwab has published over 150 peer reviewed journal publications and five books dealing with kidney disease and dialytic therapy. He has served as an invited lecturer for over 75 international and national conferences. He has directed multiple national multicenter clinical trials and was continuously funded by the National Institute of Health as a principal investigator for his investigative career.
As Chancellor, Dr. Schwab has accepted the challenging task of leading UTHSC through tough economic times. Dr. Schwab is poised and prepared to ensure that UTHSC remains the primary training center for the State of Tennessee's healthcare professionals and advances in its mission to enter the top quartile of Academic Health Science Centers in clinical care, research, and education.
