To be eligible for consideration for admission into the post-professional Graduate Program in Physical Therapy, the applicant must fulfill the following requirements:
- Hold current licensure in the United States as a physical therapist
- Earned entry-level degree in physical therapy with a GPA of 3.0 (or the equivalent from a foreign university/college).
- Official transcripts must accompany application. An “official” transcript is one sent directly to the Office of Admissions in a sealed envelope directly from the university or college attended.
- Two years of clinical practice as a physical therapist prior to matriculation into the program.
- A completed application form requires an essay describing the applicant’s goals for graduate study. A non-refundable application fee must accompany the application. For forms and further information contact:

- Three letters of recommendation from supervisors, college instructors or colleagues who can address applicant’s potential for graduate study, i.e., applicant’s critical thinking, initiative, ability to complete projects, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- International applicants whose first language is not English must submit results of the TOEFL, with a minimum score of 550 for a paper-based exam, or 213 for a computer-based exam.
- Graduate Record Examination (GRE): For applicants to the MSPT degree program, a combined score of 1000 on Verbal and Quantitative portions. (Verbal should be at least 500.) For applicants to the ScDPT, a score of at least 500 on each portion (Verbal, Quantitative, Analytical). The GRE reporting code for University of Tennessee Health Science Center is 1850.
- Computer literacy: Applicants to the post-professional Graduate Program in Physical Therapy must meet computer literacy standards designated by the Department of Physical Therapy. They must have access to current computer technology to enable collecting information via Internet and communicating via email.
September 1 Winter-Spring Semester (January – June)

Applicants will be notified of action taken by October 20 and April 20 respectively.
- A personal interview is required, when all above application items are complete.
- An additional 3-5 page typed essay is required at the time of interview. The admissions committee will grade the essay using criteria describing proficiency in written communication. A score of 80% is required. Students will be assigned the topic for the essay by the program director.
- Arrangements for both interview and essay will be made at the same time. Applicants should call the program director to arrange for interview and essay when all application materials are complete.
